The Harvest Festival is a celebration of food grown on the ground. And to thank God Sun for the good harvest, this is a very ancient festival in the world.

Importance
Pongal is one such holiday, which celebrates to thank the Sun God and Lord Indra for enabling farmers to make better crops.
On Pongal day, farmers are cooking signature products such as Pongal, Shakkara Pongal, and sugar cane provides.
A special puja is also performed to thank the god of the Sun. This harvest festival observes over four consecutive days. The first day of the holiday, January 13, name Bhogi.
On a particular day that people reject old stuff and welcome new items. Farmers destroy their old household materials in the flame while chanting “Paraiyana kadiwalum, Pudiyana Pugudulam” which means, “Let the old things go away and let the new things come in.”
The message within is that people should change with changing times. Fresh ideas should accept, and old ones should let go. The era refers to as the Uttarayan Punyakalam, which has a special significance to Hindu philosophy and deems to be particularly promising.
It assumes that this is the time when the Devas wake up after a half-year-long slumber during this era and give wealth and prosperity to the world.
On this auspicious day, the Tamils decorate their homes with bananas and mango leaves. We often decorate their houses with colourful designs of rice flour.
Why is the festival Pongal celebrated in Karnataka?
The Pongal Harvest Festival observes in different parts of the country, but differences label how they celebrate. The Pongal Festival sees in Karnataka with a lot of celebrations.
It is also known as Sankranti. Friends and relatives join each other to share greetings. The ingredients of this sweet Ellu dish are coconut, sesame seeds and sugar.
It’s traditional for people to share this delicious dish with family, relatives and neighbours. It is a gesture to prove that, from now on, the friendship will be as pleasant as Ellu with no hatred involved. Men dress in new clothes.
But they’re not the only people that dress up; they even decorate their cattle and bullocks. Humans and animals are as much a part of this unbridled merrymaking. Pongal, a sweet rice preparation, serves to the livestock.
Towards evening, a splendid procession comes out in which the cattle and bullocks are an integral part. Drum beaters also take part, and there is plenty of music, as well. The atmosphere, in general, is very bright and pleasant and promotes a feeling of cheer.

Why is the 14th or 15th of January known as Pongal?
The season focus on Sun. The planet revolves around the Sun with a tilting of 23.45 degrees. When the tilt is in front of the window, we get heat, and when the angle is out of the Sun, we get snow.
That’s why there’s summer north of the equator; it’s winter south of the equator. It appears that the Sun travels north and south of the equator because of this tilt.
On the day when the Sun goes from the south to the north, we celebrate Pongal, which may fall on the 14th or 15th of January.
Different kinds of Pongal festivals celebrated
Kannum Pongal, On this day, people are visiting relatives and friends to celebrate the festive purpose. Forgive mistakes that have made and forget the struggle between each other and join their hands on this particular day.
Maatu Pongal, As stated earlier, cattle play an equal role in the field of harvesting. Cows have an essential role to play in our lives. The commitment that it brings in the farm field and offers its full energy for the husk that we provide it.
Milk and dairy products, cow’s milk is an acceptable meal for a baby when a parent can’t feed the baby with her milk.
And we respect the cattle that have worked hard all year, offering them a wash, painting their horns and feeding them good food.
